ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

A nexus for a complex headworld designed by some guy, I guess.

Komainu and 'Wolf'

This website is entirely written and (mostly) designed by webmaster WOLF, who, to nobody's surprise, is the sole creator of The Wolf of Mizukyo's universe, as well as the story's author AND artist of the majority of the artwork featured on this website. As indicated on the landing page, this website is meant to serve as a hub, or a Wikipedia, if you will, for this original universe and all its nooks and crannies. WoM is a vast universe full of lots of lore: an ever-growing cast, a unique society built around the dragon menace, made-up terminology and species and sciences, and a fantastical world with its own countries, governments, and history. Naturally, something as complex as this has been begging to have a written nexus somewhere, and Toyhouse literatures were only gonna cut it for so long. So, here it is!

Check out the aptly-named Credits and Update History pages for website credits and update history, respectively.

More About WoM

I think the homepage sums it up nicely. Simply put, it's about a young man trying to find himself in a world of dragons and war. WoM follows the straying life of our (anti)hero Lux Ochiru, whose path is riddled with dark secrets surrounding himself and his upbringing: a family murdered, a home destroyed, and the blood of the coveted natal chimera flowing through his veins.

To expand upon this a little further, though...

Lux being edgy

WoM takes place in a world with deep technological disparity and governmental bodies vying for war. One could argue it is somewhat of a dystopia, where stretches of barren wasteland separate technologically-advanced cities from primitive villages, and greater countries are in an arms race to weaponize human society's common enemy: the dragon.

Dragons are considered a plague to humans, for they have a long history of razing human settlements in their animalistic desires for human prey to eat, or even merely out of a primitive desire for bloodshed. With various powerful abilities among dragon species and an innate ability to rapidly heal physical injuries, dragons are both hard to kill and deeply coveted for use in biological warfare. In fact, wartime science has even discovered how to fuse man and dragon into a theorized supersoldier, called the chimera.

This leads us to our protagonist. Lux Ochiru is a lone traveler who makes his living as a bounty hunter. He doesn't kill humans, though, no. He's what's called a bountier, or a bounty hunter who exclusively hunts down dragons and chimeras causing trouble. See, after his home and family were taken from him under the siege of a rampaging wyvern, the very young Lux—then named Koyuki—was taken under the wing of his adoptive father and mentor, Komainu, and trained in the art of dragonslaying. That is where his story first begins.

Over a decade after this harrowing event, a solitude Lux garners the attention of the Dragonslayer's Guild, the Oyashima government's very own program of dragonslayers allegedly designed to protect cities from dragon attacks... among other motives. When he learns he is the natal chimera—a naturally born chimera, not a converted one, of which is completely unheard of—Lux is slowly forced to unravel the demons of his past, and what they mean for his future. Thus far, much of his story involves reluctantly working with the Guild and its colorful cast of dragonslayers to learn more about himself and his purpose.

About the Webmaster

Hello! I don't really know what to share about myself on here, but I'll just go by WOLF (all caps, mind you) in the spirit of WoM. I'm just some guy from America who really, really likes world-building and writing stories, and whose free time is almost exclusively dedicated to them. Wow, what a loser! (Kidding.)

Nox and Lux

I'd rather talk about my inspirations behind WoM than myself, which is far more website-relevant, anyway, so let's do that. It aaaaaall started with me reading Tui T. Sutherland's Wings of Fire back in the late summer of 2021, which initially spurred my interest in dragons. At the time I decided I really wanted to write something about dragons myself, and crafted this idea of an apocalyptic human society at war with sapient, man-eating dragons, pulling from some of my favorite genres: cyberpunk, apocalyptic settings, dystopian eras, dark sci-fi, etc.

I wanted the story to be about a guy who killed dragons, and this guy, funnily enough, was inspired by a Splatoon OC of mine who would hunt down Salmonids. This to-be protagonist and his story’s very basic foundations were created in October of 2021, and then promptly forgotten about due to my interests shifting elsewhere. I had toyed with ideas like him having his fate intertwined with a talking dragon, serving as a "connection" between dragon and man with this unique relationship, but I could never really work out all the details and ended up scrapping the whole thing.

Come February of 2022, a couple things compelled me to come back to Lux and his story on a whim: I had a pretty bad case of creative block I thought I could tackle by writing something fresh, and I wanted an opportunity to practice another hobby of mine, learning the Japanese language. And so I finalized Lux's design and, while suffering issues with focus and motivation, I spontaneously wrote a prologue piece very obviously inspired by Sekiro, of which I'd recently watched a playthrough of. It was meant to be a one-off piece, some random thing I could get out of my system and then promptly abandon with no plans to take it anywhere. But after I wrote WoM's prologue, I didn't abandon it? I just… kept on writing. And I kept on world-building. And suddenly, I was writing a story about biological warfare and dragonslaying. Huh!

As you can see, WoM ended up straying pretty far from its root idea, and frankly, I love it all the more that way. It's something I'm constantly building as I go, and it's a whole lot of fun to do so. Nowadays, as I actively take more direct inspiration from other sources, I can outwardly say WoM can credit much of its action and world-building aspects to “us vs. them” media, like Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, and Blue Exorcist.

Fun Tidbits

Here's some random statistics for you!

  • This website was created on 4/12/23.
  • The prologue of WoM's first book was written on 2/15/22. That makes WoM over a year old now!
  • As of 6/28/23, WoM has 1 completed book with 40 chapters (including the prologue and epilogue), clocking in at 211,000+ words long. That's a lot!
  • I consider WoM's main genre dark fantasy, but I also think it includes major elements of action & adventure, low fantasy, science fiction, dystopian, and new adult. Although not centered around these genres, there are also sprinkles of comedy, romance, mystery, and thriller... although that might just be how the average books read by that point.
